Iori, in Kyoto is a company established by me and close associates in early 2004, dedicated to saving machiya (old Kyoto houses) by restoring them and offering them to travelers as places to stay when they visit Kyoto. All the machiya are situated in the heart of the old city; they provide a special opportunity for travelers to experience traditional life in Kyoto.
At the site of Iori's Sujiyacho main office, the neighboring machiya contains tea rooms and spaces to study calligraphy and flower arranging; above the office, we've constructed a 64-mat wood floored Arts Practice Hall (including a full-scale practice Noh stage). With these facilities to teach and demonstrate a wide variety of traditional arts in the appropriate settings, Iori is managing the Origin Program of Traditional Japanese Arts.
