KYOTO -- First Lady Laura Bush, accompanying U.S. President George W. Bush on a visit to Japan, tried her hand at Japanese calligraphy Wednesday following a visit to Kyoto's famous Kinkakuji Temple.

The first lady wrote the character "ei," meaning eternity, four times under the guidance of 77-year-old calligrapher Minoru Sawada during a visit to a "merchant's house" in Kyoto's Shimogyo-ku.

She smiled after receiving a vermilion-colored seal of approval, describing the experience as "very, very fun."

The building the first lady visited was 100 years old. Formerly it was a bean warehouse. Laura Bush showed an interest in Japanese culture during her visit, asking for the meaning of the character "kotobuki," meaning congratulations or longevity, which was displayed in an alcove on the first floor.
